Health Office Updates

Welcome to the 2022-2023 School Year. We are so excited to see all of the students back in school and we wanted to go over a few updates for this school year.

Medication drop off: You are still required to drop off all medication for your student(s) and hand it directly to one of the nurses. No medication should be transported on the buses by a student. We are available for medication drop off on Thursday, 8/25 and Monday, 8/29 during school hours. You can also drop off any day next week while school is in session. Please make sure to have a new doctor medication form or action plan filled out, it is required to have a new one every school year. If your doctor’s office does not have their own medication form please use the one in the attached link. Parents/guardians also need to sign the medication authorization form.

Water: Please have your student bring a reusable water bottle to school every day. Water fountains are available to refill. Cups will no longer be available and students are able to use the water fountain if needed.

Sick student at school: If your student becomes sick at school, you will be called to come pick up your child. They will not be able to stay at school until the buses arrive for dismissal. Please make sure you fill out the Emergency Contact form with 2 contacts other than a parent. Please make sure to have a back up plan for someone to pick up your child in case of an emergency or illness and you are unable to come.

COVID-19 Protocols:

This year there is NO requirement to wear a mask but students still have the option to wear one. Masks need to be brought in from home if you would like your student to wear one.

There will be NO COVID testing at school this year, this includes in school symptomatic testing, weekly testing or sending home test kits. It is the responsibility of the guardian to test if a student is symptomatic or sent home from school.

Quarantine is not required if you are a close contact. It is recommended to test on Day 6 after exposure or if symptoms occur. It is also recommended to wear a mask from the date of known exposure through Day 10.

Symptomatic individuals should stay home from school and test at home. If the student develops symptoms at school they will be sent home and asked to test at home. They can return to school if a negative test results and symptoms are improving.

For a positive at home COVID test, Day 0 is when symptoms begin or day of test if asymptomatic. Individuals should isolate for 5 days and may return to school on Day 6 if symptoms have resolved. They are required to wear a mask from Day 6-10 only. Please call the appropriate health office or email [email protected], if your student tests positive for COVID at home.

Please reach out for any questions or concerns,

 Bus Drop-Off Procedures
  • All K-8 students must be met by a parent, or guardian when the bus arrives at their bus stop. Families must notify the school if there is another individual that should be added to the authorized pick up list. If a parent, guardian, or authorized individual is not at the bus stop, the driver will radio the dispatcher and keep the child on the bus.
  • The dispatcher shall note the child’s name and assigned bus stop and direct the bus driver to proceed on the route.
  • After the last bus stop on the bus route, the driver will receive instructions from the dispatcher and may return to the bus stop to see if the parent or guardian has arrived. If the parent or guardian is still not there, the driver will radio the dispatcher and will return to take the student back to school.
  • Level I students should display a tag on their back pack indicating their name, grade, and assigned bus stop to assist the driver in the event there is no one at the bus stop to meet the student.

Bus Safety

Bus Stop Safety Reminders
  • Arrive a minimum of ten minutes before the scheduled pick up time.
  • Stand off the roadway, away from cars and traffic.
  • Do not run or play while waiting for the bus.
  • When the bus arrives, wait until the bus comes to a complete stop and the red lights flash.
  • Board the bus in an orderly fashion, no running, shouting, or pushing.
  • Never run to catch the bus.
  • When exiting the schoolbus, always walk straight away from the bus. Do not remain in the “danger zone” where the driver cannot see you.
  • Never reach under the bus to pick up lost articles.
  • Never cross the roadway behind the bus.

Student Conduct on School Buses

Procedures for Drivers, Parents and Guardians
  1. In case of any misconduct on a bus, the incident will be reported on the proper form to the school Principal or Assistant Principals. School administration will report the incident in writing to the parent or guardian concerned.
  2. The Principal or Assistant Principal will suspend the student’s transportation privileges as deemed appropriate with written notice to the parent or guardian.
  3. The length of the transportation suspension will be determined by the school administrator and the responsibility for transportation will then rest with the parent or guardian.

Loading and Unloading at Bus Stop
  1. Riders should arrive on time meaning ten minutes before the scheduled pick up time. Bus drivers will not wait.
  2. Riders will enter or leave the bus at regular stops only.
  3. Orderly behavior and respect for private property will be required.
  4. Directions of the driver must be followed by the riders when entering or exiting the bus.
  5. No K-8 student will be dropped off without a parent or guardian present for pickup.

Required Conduct aboard the Bus
  1. Riders must remain in seats and in place while the bus is in motion.
  2. Whistling and shouting are not permitted.
  3. Profanity and obscene language are forbidden
  4. Smoking is prohibited.
  5. The following disturbances are prohibited:
    1. Pushing or wrestling
    2. Annoying other passengers or disturbing their possessions
    3. Talking to the driver while driving
    4. Throwing objects within the bus or out of windows
    5. Climbing over seats
    6. Leaning out of windows
    7. Littering the bus
  6. Parents and guardians will be held responsible for any defacing or damaging of the bus.
The administration of South Shore Charter Public School shares with students and parents/guardians the responsibility for student safety during transportation to and from school.  All school buses are equipped with video recording equipment which will be used on transportation routes.  The authority for enforcing schoolwide  requirements of student conduct on buses will rest with school administration.

To ensure the safety of all students who ride in buses, it may occasionally be necessary to revoke the privilege of transportation from a student who abuses this privilege.  Parents/guardians of children whose behavior and misconduct on school buses endangers the health, safety, and welfare of other riders will be notified that their children face the loss of transportation privileges in accordance with regulations approved by the Board of Trustees.

These regulations will be included in the SSCPS Student and Family Handbook which will be sent to families next week. Families must sign either electronically or on paper indicating that the regulations contained in the Student and Family Handbook have been received and read.

Thank you for your response and your continued support of the South Shore Charter Public School.
